Common Questions About Laser Vein Treatments
If you are considering vein treatment, there are a few different options for you to choose from. For mild cases, patients can typically find relief from at-home treatments coupled with compression stockings. However, if you are experiencing severe discomfort, we may recommend a laser ablation treatment method.
The idea of receiving laser treatment can be scary for some patients, so in part one of this series, we will discuss some of the most common concerns people have regarding this treatment. If you have any further questions, or you would like to discuss your options, contact Dr. Sonja Stiller at Center for Advanced Vein Care today.
How can I prevent varicose veins?
Unfortunately, there are many factors that determine whether or not you are at a higher risk for varicose or spider veins. For example, women are at a higher risk than men, and if you have close relatives with the condition, there is a greater chance that you will develop it as well. Many of the factors are out of your control. Weight loss can help reduce the chance of developing varicose veins. However, if you do develop the condition, you can relieve some of the symptoms with compression socks.
What are the benefits of laser treatment?
As we mentioned above, there are a few different options for treating your vein condition. Compression socks are the most common form of treatment, but they do not always provide relief for more severe cases. If you find that compression socks are not working, then laser vein treatment may be the best course of action.
While the idea of vein treatment may not sound very appealing, there are many benefits to choosing this form of treatment over a more invasive procedure. In addition to being less invasive, patients can also expect to return to normal activities more quickly after the procedure, and they won’t have to worry about a scar due to the fact that this type of treatment does not require a surgical incision.
How do I prepare for treatment?
You will be permitted to eat and take medication on the morning of your procedure. We advise you to arrive for your appointment dressed in loose-fitting clothing, as your leg will be wrapped in elastic bandages after your procedure.
What happens during treatment?
Once you arrive for your treatment, you will be given a mild sedative and local anesthesia to help with the pain, as well as a pair of goggles to protect your eyes from the laser. During the procedure, the doctor will insert a small laser fiber into the damaged vein. The laser will send pulses through the vein, causing it to seal shut. The procedure as a whole will take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes per leg.
